Thomas Gottschalk surprises again with his appearance

“He’s got shingles.”

Richard Grasl, managing director of the Austrian newspaper “Kurier,” which presents the Romy Awards, handed the Diamond Romy to Gottschalk. The figurine is encrusted with 20 diamonds. “As a belt,” said Gottschalk. “He’s got shingles, shingles.”

A previous Romy award he received melted in the fire at Gottschalk’s house in Malibu, California, as Grasl recalled. Should such a catastrophe occur again, Gottschalk said he hoped that at least the diamonds would survive this time.

In November 2018, a devastating fire raged around Malibu, destroying large areas and destroying more than 1,500 homes. Among the houses burned down was that of television host Thomas Gottschalk.

Grasl said he wanted to award this Romy to Gottschalk also “because we in the media and we as a society have to acknowledge that if someone does something right a thousand times and maybe doesn’t quite do something right half the time, they still remain a superstar.” The Austrian TV and film award, the Romy, is awarded in numerous categories through public voting.
